10x is tantamount to going from horse and buggy to a car. The transformation occurs by operating from a seemingly impossible and imagined future, and takes you in a non-linear and radically different direction and approach than what you (and everyone else) have been doing up to this point.
What got you here won’t get you there. To quote the actor Leonardo DiCaprio, “Every next level of your life will require a different you.”
10x is Easier Than 2x - Dan Sullivan & Benjamin Hardy (misc excerpts)
What I read this week
📚 the Marvel Studios story - Stephanie and Charlie Wetzel
Hollywood was a place where everyone said yes, but what they really meant was maybe, and what they did was wait to make decisions until they believed they had surefire talent attached: an actor, a director, or a screenwriter with a big box-office appeal and a track record to prove it.
📚 breaking into venture - Allison Baum Gates, SemperVirens VC
When I was first getting started in venture, I asked a GP what milestones I had to reach to become a GP. He told me the pathway was simple: I just had to pass the wheelbarrow test. The other GPs must believe that if they gave you an empty wheelbarrow, you could figure out how to turn it into a wheelbarrow full of money.
💡 black triangles - Jay Barnson, Rampant Games
We came to refer to certain types of accomplishments as “black triangles.” These are important accomplishments that take a lot of effort to achieve, but upon completion you don’t have much to show for it only that more work can now proceed. It takes someone who really knows the guts of what you are doing to appreciate a black triangle.
💰 the future of payments - Simon Taylor,
Everything starts and ends with a payment.
EY Estimates the global payments market to be worth $240trn (yes, trillion), of which payment Fintech companies represent a $2.17trn market cap.
Payments disruption is less than 1% done.
By 2030 70% of all payments are expected to be "embedded" (conducted on a platform operated by a company that is not primarily in financial services).

I see you, I love you, happy new year,
H
